BUDGET
You may already have a budget in mind as to how much you would like to spend. Fax Machines range from Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 85,000. The size and features affect the price. TYPE OF MACHINE
There are two basic types of fax machines categorized on the basis of the type of paper it handles - Plain Paper or Thermal Paper. The type of paper the fax machine handles generally determines its price.

TYPE OF MACHINE MINIMUM PRICE(Rs.) MAXIMUM PRICE(Rs.)
Thermal Paper 7,000 35,000 Plain Paper 15,000 85,000
· Thermal Paper: Thermal paper fax machines use rolls of thermal paper which are specially coated. A 30 metre roll of thermal paper roll is about 100 A4 (normal letterhead) size of paper, while a 50 metre roll generally 167 A4 size papers. The machine generates heat which reacts with the coating on the paper to print the message received. Thermal paper is not
very easy to write on and curls at the edges. Also, it is difficult to gauge when to change the roll or when the roll will get over. However, the biggest drawback of thermal paper is that the print fades over time due to which you need to photocopy all important documents for your records. Thermal Paper is inexpensive and this is the reason why these fax machines are so commonly used in India today. These models have a price range between 7,000 to 35,000.
· Plain Paper: Plain paper fax machines use sheets of plain paper stacked together in a tray and this makes it easier to know when to refill the tray. Fax messages printed on these machines do not fade. However, these fax machines are far more expensive than their thermal paper counterparts. The least expensive types of plain paper fax machines print using ink-jets. These machines produce acceptable text, do not require you to photocopy documents for storage, but tend to be very slow. These models have a price range between 15,000 to 85,000.
SPEED OF TRANSMISION
The modem inside the fax machine facilitates the transfer of messages through the phone line. The speed at which the message (document) is transmitted is the modem speed / speed of transmission. This is measured in bits per second (bps). A fax machine can transmit data at any one of the three speeds available. These speeds are 9,600 bps (9.6 Kbps), the newer transmission standard called V.17 - 14,400 bps (14.4 Kbps) or 33,600bps (33.6 Kbps). You would prefer to buy a fax machine with a very fast modem if you need to receive or send a lot of messages during the day. One of the hidden costs of a fax machine is phone time. A slow fax machine increases the time taken to transmit a message which directly increases your telephone bill, when calling STD or ISD. Transmission speeds vary from country to country depending on the cabling and the speed at which the data can be transmitted. Another way to reduce costs of transmission is to purchase a machine that incorporates advanced data compression protocols. This technology reduces sending times by minimizing the amount of data needed to describe the page being sent. Virtually all fax machines are equipped with a basic compression protocol called Modified Huffman, or MH. However, machines equipped with the more advanced Modified Read (MR) Modified Modified Read (MMR) protocols can send documents as much as 25 percent faster. You should look for a fax machine with these data compression protocols.Normally thermal paper faxes have lower modem transmission speeds as compared to the plain paper fax machines. If you do not mind the extra expenditure, a plain paper fax machine with a faster modem transmission speed would be ideal if you send many faxes a day. This will help make reasonable savings in the long run. TYPE OF PRINTING CARTRIDGE
Fax machines in India print only in monochrome (Black). Different fax machines use different cartridges depending on its model number. The different types of printing cartridges available are...
· Carbon Film: A few thermal fax machines use plain paper, and use a carbon film instead of a cartridge. These machines are included in the plain paper fax machines. The heat produced by this thermal head reacts with the chemically treated ribbon (or carbon film) and produces the print on plain paper, thus making paper handling more convenient and eliminates the use of thermal paper that fades over time. These machines have a number of drawbacks, including mediocre print quality. The cost of a 100m carbon film is about Rs. 750 and it can print about 350 sheets of A4 (letterhead) size paper. Different carbon films will be required for different models. Of course you do have to replace the film when it has been used up which could fall expensive. Although these machines are slightly more expensive than the thermal fax machines, the benefit is that carbon film technology is simple, inexpensive and effective as it prints on plain paper and it costs less as compared to most inkjet and laser printing fax machines.
· Inkjet: An Inkjet fax machine uses the exact same technology as an inkjet printer to create an image. Inkjet printing method shoots ink on the paper in the form of a jet, somewhat like an ink pen on paper. These tiny dots compose the images and text that you see. Ink cartridges need to be replaced as they are used up. Inkjet cartridges cost between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1500. They come in quantities of 10 ml or 20 ml. The yield of the inkjet cartridge is about 1000 pages of A4 (letterhead) size paper. They produce acceptable quality of printing, but tend to be very slow. As a result, inkjets are usually not a good choice if you receive many faxes each day. Being in liquid form, there are chances of the ink drying-up over a period of time.
· Laser: A more expensive type of plain paper fax uses a laser or LED (Light Emitting Diode) printing engine to produce images. These faxes incorporate the same basic technology as a laser printer, using toner to produce a high-quality image on plain paper. In addition, laser/LED printing is quite reliable, with few service needs beyond toner and paper. On the downside, laser faxes tend to be much more expensive than thermal or ink-jet machines. Laser printing fax machines need toners (which is ink in a dry form). Toner costs about Rs. 3000. The yield of the toner is about 600 sheets of A4 (letterhead) size paper. The toner will have to be replaced whenever it is over. All laser printing fax machines print only in monochrome. · Thermal: Thermal paper fax machines use rolls of thermal paper which are specially coated. A 30 metre roll of thermal paper roll is about 100 A4 (normal letterhead) size of paper, while a 50 metre roll generally 167 A4 size papers. The machine generates heat which reacts with the coating on the paper to print the message received. Thermal paper is not very easy to write on and curls at the edges. Also, it is difficult to guage when to change the roll or when the roll will get over. However, the biggest drawback of thermal paper is that the print fades over time due to which you need to photocopy all important documents for your records. These fax machines are inexpensive and the cost of a roll of thermal paper is also relatively low as compared to the plain paper. It is for this reason that these machines are popular in India. FAX PRINTING RESOLUTION
Resolution is the degree of sharpness, or clarity, of what you see on a computer screen or on a piece of paper. It is measured in terms of dots per inch (in printing, characters are made of dots). This resolution can be broadly classified into Average Resolution (up to 400x400 dpi) and High Resolution (above 600x600 dpi). Advertising companies and news agencies prefer high resolutions for better print quality. Opt for a high resolution fax machine if you receive a lot of images (say in graphic designing, etc), photographs or documents that require to be received with subtle variations in printing. OTHER FEATURES
Some other features that you can consider are:
· Automatic Paper Handling: In automatic paper handling all the documents to be sent to the required destination are fed into the machine, and it automatically sends all the documents page by page. In a manual paper handling fax machine, each document to be sent has to be manually fed in one at a time. While sending a fax message, all machines allow you to feed the paper in manually. However, if you would like your fax machine to transmit the fax messages automatically, then you should ensure that your fax machine handles paper automatically. Dial the destination fax number, put the documents to be faxed in the outgoing tray, press the "Start" button.........and off they go!
· Built In Telephone Handset: Some machines are provided with a handset or telephone receiver. The fax machine can also be used to make and receive telephone calls. In India, where there are constant power cuts, using a fax machine with a built-in handset is of immense help as you can use the telephone even when the machine is switched off.
However, you cannot receive or send faxes during power failure. If you would like your fax machine to be used as a telephone as well, go in for this feature.

· Computer Printer Compatibility: The fax machine could be used to print incoming faxes as well as documents when a print command is shot by a computer (which is connected to the fax machine). It is normally preferred in small offices. You can use your fax machine as a printer and save the extra cost of buying a separate fax machine and a printer.

· Display: The display panel (screen) of fax machines are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). It shows about 10 to 16 characters per line and normally is of 1 or 2 lines. The Display shows the number you are calling, the operating mode, time, etc. There are few machines without any display and they are very inexpensive. It helps in reducing the chances of dialing wrong numbers. It also helps to use of the fax machine by visually seeing the current functions being used.
· Inbuilt Answering Machine: An answering machine comes inbuilt with most fax machines. If the machine detects a fax signal, it will receive it automatically, else it will send the call to the answering machine to receive a message from the caller. It helps you receive telephone call messages even when you are unavailable.
· Memory Reception: : With this feature multiple messages can be programmed to be transmitted at a delayed time. You can send documents when the phone rates are lower thus making tremendous savings on your telephone bill.
· Multiple Delay Transmission: With this feature multiple messages can be programmed to be transmitted at a delayed time. You can send documents when the phone rates are lower thus making tremendous savings on your telephone bill. · Speaker Phone: With this feature you can dial and even talk to another person (on the telephone) without picking the hand set. You can simultaneously talk and do other work (like type on the computer or write notes) as your hands are free.
